Who is this Prydain word search for?

This printable is designed primarily for children aged approximately 8–12, although younger children can complete it with an adult and older fans may enjoy it as a quick literary activity. It can be used after reading The Book of Three, during a fantasy-book topic, as an early-finisher task or as a quiet activity before discussing Welsh influences on the series.

The puzzle includes horizontal, vertical and diagonal words running both forwards and backwards. That makes it more challenging than a very simple early-years word search without turning it into an exhausting page of tiny print. The grid letters are deliberately large enough for normal home and school printers.

A quick guide to the Welsh-inspired words

Prydain is the Welsh name for Britain and becomes the name of Alexander's fantasy country. Mabinogi refers to the four branches at the heart of a major collection of medieval Welsh narratives. Annwn is the otherworld found in Welsh tradition, while Alexander's Annuvin is his own adapted fantasy realm. Arawn and Gwydion are names with older Welsh mythological connections that Alexander uses within his new story.

Caer is a place-name element associated with a fort or fortified place. Readers encounter it in names such as Caer Dallben and Caer Dathyl. Cantref is a Welsh territorial term that helps give Prydain its structure of small kingdoms and communities. Tylwyth appears in Tylwyth Teg, a Welsh expression commonly connected with the fair folk.

These explanations should not imply that The Chronicles of Prydain simply retells the Welsh source material. Lloyd Alexander borrowed names, echoes and ideas while creating an original children's fantasy series. The word search can become a starting point for investigating the difference between inspiration and direct retelling.

How to use the word search at home

  1. Download the PDF and print page one at actual size.
  2. Ask your child to read the word bank aloud before searching.
  3. Begin with shorter names such as DOLI, MONA and CAER.
  4. Move on to distinctive long words such as FFLEWDDUR and MABINOGI.
  5. Use a different coloured pencil for character names and Welsh-inspired terms.
  6. Check the finished puzzle against page two rather than revealing the answers immediately.

If a child becomes stuck, give a directional clue rather than pointing to the whole answer. You might say, “Look for the first F near the left side” or “This word travels diagonally”. That preserves the satisfaction of completing the search independently.

Classroom and homeschool ideas

Turn the puzzle into a short learning sequence

  • Before searching: sort the word bank into people, places and Welsh terms.
  • During the puzzle: circle unfamiliar words in the word bank and predict what they could mean.
  • After searching: choose one word and write a two-sentence explanation.
  • Map extension: locate Mona on the Prydain and Wales comparison map.
  • Reading extension: find the first book in which a chosen character appears.
  • Language extension: use the visual pronunciation guide to practise Fflewddur Fflam, Eilonwy and Prydain.

Why word searches can support reading

A word search is not a replacement for reading a novel, but it can help children become comfortable with an unfamiliar vocabulary. Fantasy names often look intimidating because their letter combinations differ from everyday English. Repeatedly scanning for FFLEWDDUR or GWYDION encourages the reader to notice the word's shape and internal letter pattern.

The activity also provides a low-pressure entry point. A child who is uncertain about beginning a classic fantasy series may first meet its characters through a puzzle, map or quiz. Once the names no longer appear strange, the opening chapters can feel more approachable.

Teachers can increase the value by pairing visual recognition with meaning. Ask children not merely to locate TARAN but to remember that he begins as an Assistant Pig-Keeper. Finding EILONWY can lead to a question about her independence and quick thinking. The puzzle then becomes retrieval practice rather than an isolated filler activity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Prydain word search free?

Yes. It is free for personal, family, homeschool and ordinary classroom use. The PDF should not be resold or republished as another downloadable product.

What size is the printable?

It is designed for A4 paper, the standard printer size used in the UK. Select actual size or 100% rather than enlarging it.

Does the PDF include answers?

Yes. Page two contains a complete coloured answer key.

What age is the puzzle suitable for?

It is best suited to approximately ages 8–12. Younger confident readers can attempt it with occasional help.

Are all the words from Welsh mythology?

No. The word bank deliberately combines novel characters with Welsh-language and myth-inspired terms. The accompanying notes explain the distinction.

Can teachers photocopy it?

Yes. Teachers may print and photocopy it for their own pupils or class, provided the Prydain.co.uk footer remains visible.

Final printing advice

Use ordinary white A4 paper and print page one in black and white if you want to save colour ink. The puzzle itself does not rely on colour. Page two is clearest in colour because the answers are highlighted using several shades, but it remains understandable on a greyscale printer.

Keep the answer key separate until the activity is complete. The printable has been arranged to use the page properly: the header sits at the top, the large square grid occupies the central working area, the word bank and learning note sit beneath it, and prydain.co.uk appears at the bottom.
