About Our Children’s Stories

Welcome to our little corner of the internet for gentle, easy-to-read children’s stories.

This website shares short stories for children, especially those around ages 5 to 8. Many of the stories are written with UK children in mind, with familiar settings such as school, home, bedtime, family life and everyday childhood moments. Families from anywhere are very welcome to read along too.

The stories are made for parents, carers, teachers and children to enjoy together. Some are calm bedtime stories. Some are school stories. Some are thoughtful, funny or full of small lessons about kindness, friendship, confidence and understanding one another.

Short Stories for Children and Families

Children do not always need a long book to enjoy a good story. Sometimes a short story before bed, after school or during a quiet moment is just right.

Here you will find children’s stories that are simple enough to follow, but still warm and meaningful. They are written to be read aloud, so the words should feel natural when a parent, grandparent, carer or teacher is sharing them with a child.

The aim is to make story time feel relaxed, comforting and easy to enjoy.

Bedtime Stories, School Stories and Everyday Adventures

Many of the stories are based on moments children recognise from everyday life. A small worry, a kind friend, a new experience, a classroom moment, a family situation or a little mistake that turns into a gentle lesson.

These everyday situations can make lovely kids stories because children often see themselves in them. A story does not have to be loud or dramatic to matter. Sometimes the best stories are the ones that help a child feel understood.

As the website grows, you will find a mixture of:

  • Bedtime stories
  • School stories
  • Friendship stories
  • Moral stories for children
  • Gentle family stories
  • Short stories for children to read with adults

Stories with Gentle Lessons

Many stories on this website include a small message, but they are not written to lecture children.

The lessons are simple and gentle. Being kind. Saying sorry. Sharing. Looking after your things. Telling the truth. Helping someone who feels left out. Staying calm when something goes wrong.

These moral stories for children are designed to open little conversations between adults and children. A story can be a soft way to talk about feelings, choices and kindness.

Mainly UK Children’s Stories, Open to Everyone

The website has a UK feel, especially in the school and family stories. You may see familiar words and settings from British childhood, such as classrooms, playgrounds, packed lunches, teachers, home routines and quiet bedtime reading.

At the same time, the themes are simple and universal. Children everywhere understand friendship, worries, mistakes, excitement and the comfort of being helped by someone kind.

So whether you are looking for UK children’s stories, bedtime stories, kids stories, or stories for parents to read aloud, you are very welcome here.

For Parents, Carers and Teachers

This site is intended as a family-friendly reading space. The stories are written to be suitable for young children, with a gentle tone and no deliberately frightening content.

They may be useful for:

  • Reading aloud at bedtime
  • A quiet moment after school
  • Classroom story time
  • Helping children talk about feelings
  • Encouraging a love of reading
  • Short reading practice with support from an adult

Every child is different, so parents and carers should choose the stories that feel right for their own child. Some children enjoy school stories. Some prefer silly stories. Some like a calm story before sleep. Please use your own judgement and read together in the way that suits your family best.

The Picnic That Floated Away

The Picnic That Floated Away Ages 5–8 • Gentle read-aloud story • Friendship, feelings and problem-solving A warm children’s story about a breezy picnic, a runaway biscuit, and finding a happy ending when plans go a little sideways. Story Time Mia had been looking forward to the picnic since breakfast. She had helped Mum pack the sandwiches into a blue plastic box. She had chosen the biscuits with the little jammy hearts in the middle. She had even folded the napkins, though one of them had come out more like a crumpled cloud than a square. “Picnics don’t mind crumpled napkins,” Dad had said. “They’re very relaxed.” Now Mia was walking through Willow Park with her rucksack bumping gently against her back. Jack was skipping ahead with a football under one arm, and Ella was carrying a small soft rabbit called Clover, who had been invited to the picnic because...

The Lost Teddy on the Night Bus

The Lost Teddy on the Night Bus A gentle children’s story about losing something special, staying safe, and asking kind grown-ups for help. Age 5–8 Read aloud: 8–10 minutes Theme: calm problem solving Story Time The bus stop was shining in the early evening rain. Not heavy rain. Not the sort that soaked your socks and made your sleeves drip. Just soft, misty rain that made the pavement sparkle under the streetlights and turned every passing car into a blur of red and white. Mia stood beside Mum with her hood up and Mr Buttons tucked under one arm. Mr Buttons was not a new teddy. He had one ear that flopped more than the other, a patch on his tummy, and three real buttons sewn down the front of his knitted waistcoat. Mia had slept with him since she was tiny. He knew about bad dreams, secret whispers, and the exact place on Mia’s pillow where teddies fitted best. A red double-decker bus came rumblin...
