Your Prydain match is…

Character

Meet all six possible quiz results

Every result represents a different kind of strength. The quiz does not ask which character is most powerful or important. It looks at how you respond to uncertainty, friendship, mistakes, preparation and the idea of heroism.

T

Taran

The developing hero. Taran is ambitious, curious and sometimes impulsive. His defining quality is not instant greatness but the ability to learn through experience, work and failure.

E

Eilonwy

The independent thinker. Eilonwy is intelligent, outspoken and resourceful. She refuses to accept a limited role and often recognises the flaw in a plan before anyone else.

F

Fflewddur Fflam

The hopeful storyteller. Fflewddur uses music, humour and elaborate tales to lift his companions. Beneath the comedy is a brave and generous friend.

G

Gurgi

The loyal heart. Gurgi is openly frightened at times, which makes his devotion more meaningful. His story shows children that courage does not require the absence of fear.

Gw

Gwydion

The thoughtful leader. Gwydion plans carefully, protects others and avoids boasting. He treats leadership as service rather than personal importance.

D

Doli

The practical problem-solver. Doli may grumble, but he keeps helping. His competence and reliability make him indispensable when grand speeches are less useful than action.

Why these questions reveal a character match

The five questions focus on decisions rather than favourite colours or foods. Prydain's characters are memorable because they approach the same danger in different ways. Taran moves towards a challenge because he wants to become worthy of responsibility. Eilonwy questions assumptions. Gwydion considers the whole group. Doli wants to apply a practical solution. Fflewddur protects morale, while Gurgi protects the emotional bond between friends.

No five-question quiz can capture a complete personality, and real people contain qualities from every result. A reader may be as outspoken as Eilonwy at school, as careful as Gwydion during an emergency and as comfort-loving as Gurgi at the end of a tiring day. The result simply identifies the pattern appearing most often in these choices.

What children can learn from the quiz

Personality quizzes can become useful reading activities when children are asked to justify their choices. Instead of stopping at “I got Taran”, ask which answer moved the result in that direction. Was it the desire to volunteer, the willingness to learn from a mistake or the belief that heroism develops over time?

This turns a light activity into character analysis. Children connect behaviour with evidence, compare different responses and recognise that stories contain more than one kind of courage. It can also help reluctant readers enter a book series through a playful question before facing unfamiliar names and a five-volume adventure.

Discussion prompts for families and classrooms

  • Did the result surprise you? Which other character might fit?
  • Which answer was hardest to choose, and why?
  • Does Taran behave the same way at the beginning and end of the series?
  • How can Gurgi be afraid and brave at the same time?
  • When does Eilonwy's directness help the group?
  • Is Fflewddur dishonest, imaginative or sometimes both?
  • What is the difference between leadership and being in charge?
  • Why might Doli's practical help matter more than recognition?

Which book should you read after the quiz?

New readers should normally begin with The Book of Three. It introduces Taran, Eilonwy, Fflewddur, Gurgi, Gwydion and Doli while establishing the dangers and humour of Prydain. Readers who already know the first adventure can continue into The Black Cauldron, where ideas about courage and sacrifice become more serious.

The personalities also develop across the series. A quiz answer based only on the early books may change after Taran Wanderer or The High King. Retaking the quiz after finishing all five novels creates an interesting discussion about whether the reader changed, their understanding of the characters changed, or both.

Frequently asked questions

Which Prydain characters can I get?

The six results are Taran, Princess Eilonwy, Fflewddur Fflam, Gurgi, Prince Gwydion and Doli of the Fair Folk.

How many questions are in the quiz?

There are five questions, each containing six possible answers. It normally takes about two or three minutes.

What happens if my scores are tied?

The interactive and printable versions use your first answer as the tie-breaker. That question asks about your instinctive response to an unexpected obstacle.

Is the quiz suitable for children?

Yes. The questions contain no frightening material and all results use positive, age-appropriate language. Younger children may need an adult to read the choices aloud.

Do I need to read the books first?

No. The quiz can introduce the characters to a new reader. Existing fans may understand the personality descriptions more deeply.

Can teachers print the quiz?

Yes. Select “Print Paper Quiz” for a clean offline worksheet with its own scoring key.

Is this an official Disney or Lloyd Alexander quiz?

No. It is an independent, unofficial literary activity created for Prydain.co.uk and is not affiliated with Disney or the author's estate.

Final thought

The best Prydain character is not necessarily the one who appears most fearless. Alexander's stories repeatedly show that courage can look like learning, questioning, planning, repairing, encouraging or remaining loyal. That is why each quiz result has something worth celebrating.

Take the quiz once for instinct, share the result with another reader and compare answers. Then return after reading the series. A different outcome may reveal how much both Taran and the reader have grown along the road.
