Free Cynefin printable for children

Welsh Place Name Detective: A Free Printable for Primary School

A simple local-history and language activity that helps children investigate the meaning, clues and stories behind the name of their street, village, town or nearby landmark.

Ages 5–11One-page A4 printableCynefin activitiesWelsh & English

This Welsh place name detective printable is one of Prydain’s Cynefin activities for primary school. It turns an everyday name on a road sign or map into a child-led enquiry. Children do not need to know Welsh already: they notice a name, collect clues and ask a trusted adult, library or local source to help them find out more.

Important: Welsh place names are rich and sometimes have more than one suggested meaning. Encourage children to record where their information came from rather than guessing. The goal is curiosity, not a perfect translation.

Why investigate Welsh place names?

Place names are small pieces of local history. They can point towards a river, valley, bridge, hill, church, family, farm or older way of describing the landscape. For children, investigating a familiar name helps make Welsh visible in the world around them—not only in a lesson book.

This is why local place-name research works so well as a Cynefin activity. It connects language, geography, family knowledge and a sense of belonging. A child in Cardiff, a coastal village, a valley community or an English-speaking home can all begin with a place that matters to them.

How to use this Cynefin activity

  1. Choose a real name.
Use a street sign, village sign, bus stop, hill, river, park or map.
  2. Collect clues.
Copy the spelling carefully and notice familiar Welsh word parts.
  3. Check a source.
Ask a family member, teacher, library or local-history source before recording a possible meaning.

Ideas for home and school

Make a class map

Add each child’s discovery to a shared map of places that matter to the class.

Compare evidence

Discuss the difference between something observed on a sign and something learned from a trusted source.

Build a word wall

Collect Welsh place-name clues such as aber, cwm, pont, pen and bryn.

Questions parents and teachers ask

Do children need to translate the whole place name?

No. One clue is enough. Place names can be complex, and the activity is about building careful curiosity.

What if our local name does not look Welsh?

That is still useful. Children can explore why a name matters to their family or community, and compare it with Welsh names nearby.

Can we use this with younger children?

Yes. Choose one sign, say the name aloud, tick a word clue together and let children draw their place.
