Cynefin Activities for Primary School

Practical, child-friendly activities that help children explore the people, places, language, nature and stories that make their corner of Wales feel like home.

Reception to Year 6Welsh & English supportPrintables & outdoor learning

Welcome to Prydain’s growing collection of Cynefin activities for primary school. Here you will find gentle ideas for classrooms, home education and family learning in Wales. Use them to look closely at a local street, ask a grandparent a question, notice a Welsh place name, explore nature, or discover a story connected to home.

What does cynefin mean? Cynefin is a Welsh word often used to describe a feeling of belonging: the places, people, experiences, history, language and landscape that help shape who we are. It can include Wales, but it also includes each child’s own family, community and connections beyond Wales.

Why use Cynefin activities with children?

Start with what is real

Children learn from the street they walk along, the park they know, the people around them and the stories they hear at home.

Build belonging

There is no single “right” Welsh experience. Every child can share places, traditions and relationships that matter to them.

Make learning memorable

A local clue, drawing, conversation or photograph becomes evidence of learning that belongs to the child—not a generic answer.

How to use these resources

  1. Choose one activity.
Pick a printable below that suits your children’s age, time and setting.
  2. Go, notice or ask.
Use the child’s own neighbourhood, memories and trusted adults as the starting point.
  3. Share the discovery.
Make a display, map, class book or short piece of writing from what was found.

Ideas that work especially well

On a local walk

Spot a date on a building, an old sign, a Welsh word, a tree, a river, a plaque or a local landmark.

At home

Ask about a favourite childhood game, a family journey, a place that has changed, or a local celebration.

In class

Bring everyone’s discoveries together in a shared map, “People of Our Place” book or belonging quilt.

Questions parents and teachers ask

What age are these Cynefin activities for?

Most activities can be adapted for children from Reception through primary school. Younger children can draw, talk and match pictures; older children can interview, compare sources and write about change over time.

Do children need to speak Welsh?

No. Prydain activities are designed to welcome Welsh speakers, learners and non-Welsh-speaking families. Where Welsh words appear, include English meaning and use them as an invitation to notice language in everyday life.

What makes a good Cynefin activity?

It begins with the child’s own world and leaves room for a personal answer. The strongest activities ask children to observe, ask, draw, remember, compare or find a trustworthy local source.

Can we do these without a class trip?

Yes. A view from a window, a route to school, a family conversation, an old photograph or a map can all be meaningful starting points.

Make your own Cynefin collection

Save your completed sheets in a folder or scrapbook. Over time, children create a personal record of the places and people that matter to them. Explore more school learning resources on Prydain.
