Putting Clothes in the Laundry Basket

For parents and carers

This activity helps toddlers practise simple household helping: picking up soft clothes, putting them in a basket, sorting colours, and learning words like clothes, basket, socks, shirt, towel, clean, dirty, and done.

Helping safely

Little children can help with soft clothes, socks, towels, and small safe items. A grown-up should handle washing machines, detergent, plugs, wet floors, heavy baskets, and anything sharp or delicate.

Read-aloud story: The Little Laundry Helper

Mum has a soft blue basket.
“Can you help with the clothes?” she asks.
One sock goes in the basket.
One little shirt goes in too.
A towel goes plop on top.
Red clothes here. Blue clothes there.
Fold, fold, fold the soft cloth.
“Thank you, laundry helper,” says Mum.

Simple toddler steps

1. Pick up. Choose one soft sock or small towel.
2. Drop in. Put it into the laundry basket.
3. Sort. Try red here and blue there.
4. Fold. Fold a soft cloth with a grown-up.
5. Say done. Little helping is real helping.
