The printable opens by itself, separate from the Blogger page. This prevents menus, adverts and theme elements from appearing over the activity. It is laid out as five columns and six rows on one A4 portrait page.

For the neatest result, choose A4 portrait, 100% scale and turn off browser headers and footers. Children can use a pencil first and then trace again with coloured pencils.

How to use this Welsh handwriting printable

1

Look and say

Point to the bold letter. Say its name or sound before putting pencil to paper. Use our linked alphabet guide when a sound is unfamiliar.

2

Trace slowly

Follow the first pale row from left to right. With double letters, keep CH, DD or LL together as one Welsh alphabet unit.

3

Try independently

Trace the second row, then turn the sheet over and write five favourite letters without looking. Accuracy matters more than speed.

Why does the Welsh alphabet have 29 letters?

The modern Welsh alphabet has 29 letters in this order: A, B, C, CH, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, NG, H, I, J, L, LL, M, N, O, P, PH, R, RH, S, T, TH, U, W, Y. Eight entries are digraphs, meaning that two written characters represent one letter. This is why a Welsh alphabet worksheet should not simply use an English A–Z template.

The most common beginner mix-up is F and FF. Welsh F sounds like the English V in “van”, while FF sounds like the English F in “fish”. DD resembles the TH sound in “this”, while TH resembles the sound in “thin”. LL has no exact English equivalent, so young beginners may need to hear it several times.

Welsh also treats W and Y as vowels in many words. There are seven Welsh vowels altogether: A, E, I, O, U, W and Y. For more help with these sounds, use the full 29-letter Welsh alphabet chart and pronunciation guide.

Easy games to use after tracing

Alphabet detective

Ask your child to colour every double letter red. There should be eight: CH, DD, FF, NG, LL, PH, RH and TH.

First-word pictures

Choose five letters and draw one Welsh word for each. Start with easy words such as afal, bara, ci, mam and seren.

Find it in Wales

Look for Welsh letters on bilingual signs, food packaging, library books or place names. Let your child tick each letter they recognise.

Keep sessions short—about five or ten minutes is plenty for a young child. A relaxed page completed over several days is more useful than a rushed worksheet. Praise careful pencil control, curiosity and willingness to attempt a new sound.

First Welsh Alphabet Adventure

A worksheet is useful for handwriting, but a book gives the letters a shared-reading context. This bilingual children’s alphabet adventure can be used after tracing: choose a letter from the worksheet, find a related page and read the Welsh and English text together.

Welsh alphabet worksheet FAQs

What age is this tracing sheet for?

It is designed mainly for children aged 4–8. Younger children may trace a few large letters with adult help, while older beginners can use the complete sheet for alphabet-order practice.

Does the worksheet contain every Welsh letter?

Yes. It contains all 29 letters, including the eight digraphs that are treated as single letters in Welsh.

Why are there no K, Q, V, X or Z cards?

They are not part of the traditional Welsh alphabet, although they can appear in borrowed words, names and modern usage.

Should my child finish the whole sheet at once?

No. Fold the page or cover unused rows and practise four or five letters at a time. Short, repeated practice is usually more comfortable for small hands.

Where can we learn the sounds?

Use the linked Prydain alphabet guide for simple English sound clues. Because written clues are only approximations, listening to a fluent Welsh speaker or trusted Welsh-language recording is also valuable.
