Make PE mornings easier with this free PE day checklist for UK children. The one-page picture printable helps families remember common sports-kit items while leaving space for the most important instruction of all: check what your child’s own school requires.
There is no universal Reception PE kit list. Some schools ask children to arrive wearing their PE clothes. Others keep a labelled drawstring bag in school, request trainers only on certain days or use different kit for indoor and outdoor lessons. This checklist deliberately avoids school colours, logos and fixed rules so it can be used across the UK without suggesting that parents must buy unnecessary items.

What does a child need for primary school PE?
The correct answer is whatever appears in the current uniform or PE information from your child’s school. Common items include a suitable top, shorts or sports bottoms and footwear, but colours, styles and changing arrangements vary. Reception pupils may be asked to wear PE kit for the whole day, change in class or leave a bag at school for part of the term.
Check the school website, welcome pack, newsletter or parent communication before buying or packing anything. If the wording is unclear, ask whether the kit should be worn to school, whether indoor shoes are needed, whether outdoor layers are required and how often the bag comes home for washing.
How to use the PE day picture checklist
Keep the printable beside your child’s usual school-preparation area. On the evening before PE, point to each relevant picture and let your child find the corresponding item. If pupils attend wearing their kit, use the clothing pictures as a dressing sequence. If they change at school, use them as packing prompts.
Young children do not need to complete the checklist without support. An adult should still confirm that the correct day, clothing and footwear have been chosen. The child’s role can be as simple as placing the named bag by the door or checking one box after a parent reads it aloud.

Sports top
Use the colour and style specified by school. Mark the name somewhere permitted and check it remains readable after washing.
Shorts or sports bottoms
The appropriate item may depend on school rules, weather and whether the lesson is indoors or outdoors. Avoid assuming a particular colour.
Socks
If children change clothes, a separate named pair may be requested. Check that your child can identify their own belongings.
Suitable footwear
Schools may request plimsolls, trainers, ordinary school shoes or bare feet for different activities. Send only the footwear the school has specified.
Named PE bag
A simple drawstring bag is common, but it is not universal. Make sure the fastening is manageable and the name can be seen without displaying unnecessary personal details publicly.
Water bottle
Follow the school’s rules about bottles and where they are stored. Check the lid closes securely and label the bottle clearly.
Hair tie and jewellery
Long hair may need tying back. Rules for earrings and other jewellery differ, so ask the school rather than relying on a general checklist.
Weather layer
Outdoor PE may require a sweatshirt, tracksuit layer or waterproof item. Pack one only when it matches the school’s guidance.
Labelling a Reception PE kit
Reception clothing is frequently taken off, turned inside out and placed beside similar-looking items. Label the top, bottoms, socks, footwear and bag in the way recommended by school. Check labels occasionally because handwriting fades and adhesive labels can loosen.
Practise recognising the label with your child. They do not have to read every letter: a familiar first name, colour mark or small approved symbol may help them distinguish their belongings. Avoid putting a child’s full name prominently on the outside of a bag if it will be carried in public; follow the school’s safeguarding and labelling advice.
Helping children change for PE independently
Choose permitted clothing that your child can manage as comfortably as possible. At home, practise one small skill at a time, such as turning a top the right way round, opening the PE bag or placing removed clothes together. Present this as useful practice rather than a test they can fail.
Some children need more time or adult help because of age, coordination, sensory needs, disability or unfamiliar fastenings. Share relevant information with the teacher. Independence develops gradually, and reasonable support matters more than completing a change at the same speed as classmates.
Keeping PE kit affordable
Read the policy before purchasing duplicates or branded pieces. In England, schools must consider uniform affordability, and current rules limit compulsory branded school-uniform and PE-kit items. Families who cannot afford required uniform or PE kit should contact the headteacher to ask what support is available. Requirements and assistance differ across the UK, so use the guidance applying to your nation and school.
Second-hand uniform schemes can be useful because young children often outgrow kit before wearing it out. When receiving used footwear, check that it fits comfortably and is suitable for the activity. Prydain does not recommend particular products, suppliers or brands.
PE kit washing and weekly organisation
When the bag comes home, empty it fully rather than washing only the most visible item. Check damp clothing, socks and the bottle, then look for school notices about the next lesson. Return the clean kit according to the school timetable.
