The print button opens only the poster. Choose A4 portrait, 100% scale, no margins, and turn off browser headers and footers.

A note about the title: this resource uses the documented traditional rhyme Gwcw Fach. No reliable historical text could be found for a separate rhyme called “Hwian, Hwian, Gwcw”, so invented words have not been presented as Welsh tradition.

What does Gwcw Fach mean?

Gwcw Fach means “Little Cuckoo”. The speaker addresses a cuckoo singing among prickly gorse and playfully calls the bird foolish for choosing such an uncomfortable place. The cuckoo is told to go towards the pleasant parish of Dolgellau, where it will find a grove of green birch trees.

The repeated Ffal di ral… lines are a traditional nonsense refrain. They supply sound, rhythm and musical momentum rather than a sentence that can be translated word for word. The English section therefore translates the four meaningful lines and leaves the refrain as part of the Welsh song.

Traditional Welsh verse

Gwcw fach, ond ’twyt ti’n ffolog,
Ffal di ral di rw, dw ti rei tei O,
Yn canu ’mhlith yr eithin pigog,
Ffal di ral di rw, dw ti rei tei O;
Dos i blwy Dolgellau dirion,
Ffal di ral di rw, dw ti rei tei O;
Ti gei lwyn o fedw gwyrddion,
Ffal di ral di rw, dw ti rei tei O.

English translation

Little cuckoo, aren’t you foolish,
Singing among the prickly gorse?
Go to the gentle parish of Dolgellau;
There you will find a grove of green birches.

The sung syllables between the lines are playful sounds and have deliberately not been given a false English meaning.

Why does bach become fach?

The dictionary form of the adjective is bach, meaning small or little. Gwcw is treated as a feminine noun here, so the initial b changes to f through a Welsh soft mutation. That is why the title says Gwcw Fach rather than Gwcw Bach. Young children do not need to memorise the grammar rule immediately; repeated exposure helps the form begin to sound natural.

Using the printable for EYFS nature learning

Read the four meaningful lines first, pointing to the bird, branches and leaves. On the next reading, add the nonsense refrain and encourage children to join in with its rhythm. They may learn those playful sounds before the vocabulary, which gives them a comfortable way into a Welsh-language activity.

Pair the poster with safe outdoor observation. Look for trees, birds and yellow flowers, but remind children that gorse is prickly and should not be handled. Use photographs if gorse or birch trees are not available nearby. Children can make a simple two-note cuckoo call, flap their arms gently or pretend to fly from a prickly bush to a leafy grove.

For a creative task, provide green, brown and yellow pencils and invite children to continue the branches around a separate sheet of paper. They could add a nest, leaves or an imaginary Welsh woodland. The activity can support mark-making and nature vocabulary without asking young learners to copy a long passage.

KS1 poetry and Welsh-language ideas

Older pupils can compare the meaningful words with the nonsense refrain. Ask what the refrain contributes even though it does not tell the story. Children may notice that repeated sounds make the verse easier to remember and invite a group to sing together. They can create their own short sound refrain while leaving the traditional Welsh wording unchanged.

The poem also opens a useful conversation about place. Dolgellau sits in north-west Wales within a landscape of wooded valleys and mountains. Pupils can locate Wales, Gwynedd and Dolgellau on an age-appropriate map, then discuss why a bird might prefer green trees to prickly gorse.

Try a listening sequence with four picture cards: cuckoo, gorse, Dolgellau and birch trees. Read the Welsh lines in mixed order and let children select the matching picture. This checks understanding without relying on a written translation.

About this free Welsh rhyme poster

The A4 printable is intentionally uncluttered, with the Welsh verse placed above the new English translation. The border uses original SVG branches, ellipses for leaves and a small bird assembled from simple geometric shapes. It contains no commercial characters, logos, stock pictures or external fonts.

The design can be displayed during a spring nature topic, used for a Welsh rhyme session or placed in a home-learning folder. It should print clearly in colour or greyscale. The separate print function opens only the 209 × 296 mm SVG inside an A4 page, avoiding the extra article pages that normal browser printing can create.
