What are odd and even numbers?

An even number can be divided into two equal whole-number groups with nothing left over. An odd number leaves one item without a partner. This free odd and even numbers to 20 poster makes that idea visible before introducing a rule based only on the final digit.

For example, four counters can be arranged as two equal pairs, so 4 is even. Five counters make two pairs with one counter left over, so 5 is odd. Children can reproduce the examples with buttons, bricks, counters or small toys.

Even: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

Why the poster uses pairs

Simply memorising two lists may help a child answer a sorting question, but pairs explain why the categories work. When every object has a partner, the collection can be split fairly into two equal groups. When one object remains, the number is odd.

Once that meaning is secure, children can use the final-digit pattern. Whole numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 are even. Whole numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 are odd. This remains true for numbers larger than 20, so the early pattern becomes a useful general rule.

Start with real objects

Give the child a small quantity and ask them to place the objects in twos. Say, “Does every one have a partner?” before naming the number odd or even.

Move to number recognition

Point to a number on the poster and ask the child to predict its group. They can then check by looking at its final digit or building the quantity.

Five quick odd and even maths activities

  1. Pair the counters: choose a number card, count out that many counters and arrange them in pairs.
  2. Odd or even hunt: find numbers around the home on clocks, books or packaging and sort them aloud.
  3. Roll and decide: roll one or two dice, find the total and decide whether it is odd or even.
  4. Spot the mistake: deliberately place 13 in the even column and ask the child to explain what is wrong.
  5. Continue the pattern: cover the end of a number sequence and ask which odd or even number comes next.

Useful patterns to discuss with KS1 children

Odd and even numbers alternate when counting in ones. Adding two to a number keeps it in the same group, which is why counting in twos produces only even numbers when starting at zero. The doubles answers on a doubles poster are also all even because two equal whole-number groups can always be paired.

Keep these observations conversational rather than turning all of them into rules to learn at once. Ask what the child notices and invite them to test an idea with objects. Explaining a pattern in their own words is valuable mathematical thinking.
