stays on.

Small hands grip.

Pull, pull.

Stuck.

Heel wiggles.

Toe wiggles.

Boot stays on.

Pull, pull.

Stuck.

Red cheeks.

Tight fingers.

Foot kicks up.

Kick, kick.

The boot squeaks.

Squeak, squeak.

Mum kneels down.

“Hold tight.”

Two hands grip.

One hand pulls.

Pull, pull.

Stuck.

The sock slips.

The boot bends.

The foot kicks.

Kick, kick, kick.

“Again,” says Mum.

Pull, pull, pull.

Squeeeeeak.
POP! Bare toes spread.
Pop! The boot comes off, the sock comes too, and bare toes spread on the floor.

The boot stretches.

The toes curl.

The leg lifts.

Then—

POP!

Boot comes off.

Sock comes too.

Bare toes spread.

One toe.

Two toes.

Five toes.

The red boot

falls over.

Thud.

Tiny foot drops.

Cold floor.

Hard floor.

Toes press down.

Tap.

Tap.

Shhh.

Sleepy sound: One red boot down, five toes out, tap, tap, shhh.
